As people become more and more "connected" through social media platforms, there comes a blatant and awkward consequence; people are losing out on real socialization. The following video presentation by Kristin Gallucci explores some of the most prolific effects being experienced, as a result of our social media connections. Watch the video and then employ concepts within our Social Psychology chapter to address the posed questions.
Please complete the following questions in complete sentences, employing appropriate paragraph structuring, grammar and syntax. Include any necessary citations and references in your submission.
- Gallucci noted that, according to the Global Web Index, we average two hours a day on social media and the time spent there only continues to climb as we become more and more addicted, reaching the point where urges to check social media become stronger than urges for sex. She further noted that some of the greatest minds continue to strive to make social media even more addictive. Although there are numerous ways to make this happen, consider the role of social influence to address this addiction growth. How do you think these "great minds" are employing conformity, groupthink, and/or compliance to drive people's participation on social media platforms?
- Slactivism is a term identified by Gallucci to address how many people now respond to social issues. Review Gallucci's explanation of how people tend to engage is social media activism. Do you believe such engagement demonstrates cognitive dissonance? Present an example and explanation of your position.
- Gallucci concludes by offering suggestions to regain focus in our lives. Would you be willing to employ any of her suggestions? If so, which ones? Explore the function of social cognition, specifically attitudes, in our chapter. Applying the three components of attitudes, identify the one(s) that would best explain your answer. Be sure to elaborate so as to demonstrate how the component(s) influence your response.
